Burkina Faso’s Grim Toll: 223 Lives Lost in Retaliatory Strike, Reveals Human Rights Watch

According to a recent report by Human Rights Watch, Burkina Faso’s military carried out a devastating attack resulting in the deaths of over 220 civilians, including at least 56 children, in a single day earlier this year.

The attacks, which occurred on 25 February, saw the army kill 179 people in Soro village and 44 others in the nearby Nondin village.

HRW labeled these mass killings as some of the worst instances of military abuse in the country in nearly a decade. Despite this revelation, Burkinabè authorities have not yet responded to the report.

Survivors recounted how a military convoy descended on Nondin village shortly after Islamist fighters passed nearby, going door-to-door and opening fire on villagers.

The soldiers then moved on to Soro village, continuing their deadly assault.

These horrific events are believed to be retaliation by the military, accusing the villagers of aiding armed Islamist fighters.

Human Rights Watch has condemned these actions, stating that they represent the latest in a series of civilian massacres by the Burkina Faso military in its counterinsurgency efforts.

Despite promises from the military junta, which seized power in a 2022 coup, to end the insurgency, violence continues to escalate in the Sahel country, with jihadist groups controlling more than a third of Burkina Faso.

International bodies, including the European Union and United Nations, have accused Burkina Faso of serious human rights violations in its fight against insurgency, including indiscriminate killings and forced disappearances.
