Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso believes his team winning the Bundesliga for the first time is a positive development for German football, marking the end of Bayern Munich’s 11-year title streak.

“I’m delighted for everyone,” the Spaniard said to DAZN after Sunday’s 5-0 victory over Werder Bremen. This win secured the title with five games remaining, and the team remains undefeated in 29 league matches.

“Maybe it’s beneficial for the Bundesliga and German football that other teams have the chance to win. We need to savor this moment. It’s a fantastic achievement. Now it’s time to celebrate. We absolutely deserve this.”

Leverkusen is also on the brink of achieving a treble, with a Europa League quarter-final second leg against West Ham United on Thursday and a German Cup final against second division Kaiserslautern on May 25.

However, Alonso wants his team to celebrate their victory first. “We can focus on West Ham soon, but tonight is for celebrating. Next week is a different story. The players are exceptional, both on and off the pitch,” he said.

“We still have major objectives for this season. It’s an excellent position for me to be in. This feeling is incredible.”

Alonso, who was drenched in beer during a massive pitch invasion, has declined offers to manage his former clubs, Liverpool and Bayern Munich, to stay at Leverkusen. He stated, “It was the right decision.”
