The Kebbi State Government has launched an initiative to provide free medical treatment to mentally ill patients.

Commissioner for Special Duties, Alhaji Zayyanu Umar-Aliero, announced the distribution of free drugs to 27,000 patients. This effort aims to reduce mental illness cases in the state.

According to Umar-Aliero, the government has mandated his ministry to ensure continuity in the availability and distribution of free drugs. Governor Nasir Idris has prioritized the treatment of people with mental illnesses.

The commissioner advised parents and guardians to adhere to prescription guidelines.

The state government has also added free feeding and transportation for patients from all 21 councils. New patients will receive similar benefits, including free drugs and transportation. Dr. Shamsudeen Isma’il, Consultant Psychiatrist, confirmed the availability of drugs for the target treatment period.

This decision comes after consulting with his family due to a worsening medical situation at home. Ngelale submitted a memo to the Chief of Staff on Friday, notifying him of his leave.

Ngelale’s leave affects his roles as Special Presidential Envoy on Climate Action and Chairman of the Presidential Steering Committee on Project Evergreen.

He expressed hope to return to full-time national service when circumstances permit. The leave of absence takes effect immediately, with no specified date for his return.

“I look forward to returning to full-time national service when time, healing, and fate permit,” Ngelale said. He respectfully asked for privacy for his family during this challenging time.

The Minister of Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, has condemned a viral video showing a lady filming her mentally unstable mother.

The minister described the video as disturbing, unacceptable, and potentially harmful. She emphasized that exploiting vulnerable individuals, especially those struggling with mental health issues, goes against the values of empathy and care.

The video, which has sparked outrage online, shows the lady engaging with her visibly unwell and unkempt mother. The lady claims her mother became mentally ill after her father’s death and has been living on the streets. Despite this, the lady visits her mother periodically with food and money.

Kennedy-Ohanenye urged the public to demonstrate compassion and understanding towards individuals suffering from mental health issues. She stated, “Mental illness demands compassion, understanding, and support – not ridicule or exploitation”.

The ministry is seeking information on the mother’s identity and condition to ensure proper care and protection.
