The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has taken a bold step by serving the Federal Government with a 21-day strike notice.

This move is aimed at pressing home their demands for the implementation of unmet agreements. The notice was issued after the National Executive Council meeting at the University of Ibadan.

According to sources within ASUU, the notice is not an ultimatum but a requirement under labor laws.

The union is giving the government 21 days to address their grievances before embarking on a nationwide strike. This move is seen as a last resort to ensure their demands are met.

ASUU President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, expressed frustration over unimplemented agreements, including the 2009 re-negotiated agreements.

He highlighted the accumulation of academic allowances and the need for revitalization funds to upgrade universities. Osodeke emphasized the importance of meeting these demands to prevent the strike.

The Minister of Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, has condemned a viral video showing a lady filming her mentally unstable mother.

The minister described the video as disturbing, unacceptable, and potentially harmful. She emphasized that exploiting vulnerable individuals, especially those struggling with mental health issues, goes against the values of empathy and care.

The video, which has sparked outrage online, shows the lady engaging with her visibly unwell and unkempt mother. The lady claims her mother became mentally ill after her father’s death and has been living on the streets. Despite this, the lady visits her mother periodically with food and money.

Kennedy-Ohanenye urged the public to demonstrate compassion and understanding towards individuals suffering from mental health issues. She stated, “Mental illness demands compassion, understanding, and support – not ridicule or exploitation”.

The ministry is seeking information on the mother’s identity and condition to ensure proper care and protection.
