The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to intervene in the abduction of 20 medical students.

The students were kidnapped on their way to Enugu for a conference, sparking concern for their safety. The NMA Secretary-General, Dr Benjamin Egbo, urged the IGP to deploy necessary resources for their rescue.

According to the NMA, the incident occurred between Otukpo and Enugu in Benue State, with one student managing to share their location via Google Maps. The association expressed deep concern for the students’ safety and well-being, urging swift police action. The NMA offered to provide assistance and support to facilitate the rescue efforts.

The IGP has ordered the deployment of tactical operatives and assets to ensure the prompt rescue of the kidnapped students. The NMA believes swift action is crucial to secure the students’ safe return. “We implore your office to deploy all necessary resources to secure their immediate and safe return,” Dr Egbo said.

This decision comes after consulting with his family due to a worsening medical situation at home. Ngelale submitted a memo to the Chief of Staff on Friday, notifying him of his leave.

Ngelale’s leave affects his roles as Special Presidential Envoy on Climate Action and Chairman of the Presidential Steering Committee on Project Evergreen.

He expressed hope to return to full-time national service when circumstances permit. The leave of absence takes effect immediately, with no specified date for his return.

“I look forward to returning to full-time national service when time, healing, and fate permit,” Ngelale said. He respectfully asked for privacy for his family during this challenging time.

The ministry is seeking information on the mother’s identity and condition to ensure proper care and protection.
