Mason Greenwood made a impressive debut for Marseille, scoring twice in their 5-1 win over Brest in the opening game of the Ligue 1 season.
The former Manchester United forward struck within three minutes and added another goal from the penalty spot on the half-hour mark.
Greenwood’s goals were part of a dominant performance by Marseille, who also saw Luis Henrique score twice and Elye Wahi convert a penalty.
The win marks a strong start for new manager Roberto De Zerbi, who took over the team in June.
Despite the convincing win, Marseille’s signing of Greenwood has been met with controversy.
The 22-year-old was suspended by Manchester United in January 2022 following allegations of attempted rape and sexual assault, although prosecutors dropped the charges in February 2023.
De Zerbi praised his team’s performance, saying, “I’m very happy with everything. I’m very pleased with the result and the attitude of the team… I don’t know if we’re really good and I don’t know where we’ll come, but people must be sure that this is a group of hard-working players, which is important.”
In other Ligue 1 news, Lille beat Reims 2-0 after a lengthy first-half stoppage due to an injury suffered by Angel Gomes. Monaco takes on Saint-Etienne later today, while Paris Saint-Germain began their title defense with a 4-1 win at Le Havre on Friday.
