President Bola Tinubu has approved a policy to address the challenges facing Nigeria’s health human resources. The National Policy on Health Workforce Migration is a comprehensive strategy to manage, harness, and reverse health worker migration.

Prof Muhammad Pate, Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, disclosed this on his X handle. The policy is more than just a response to the ongoing exodus of healthcare professionals.

The policy envisions a thriving workforce that is well-supported, adequately rewarded, and optimally utilised to meet the healthcare needs of all Nigerians. It sets a framework for regular reviews of working conditions, ensuring that health workers receive the recognition and rewards they deserve.

The Nigeria Human Health Resource Programme is central to this vision. It aims to retain top talent within Nigeria by fostering an environment conducive to professional growth and stability.

The policy focuses on digital health infrastructure, including Electronic Medical Records, telehealth, and a comprehensive Health Workforce Registry. These innovations will streamline healthcare delivery and enhance the equitable distribution of health workers.

Capacity building is at the heart of this policy, recognising the importance of continuous professional development. Strategic partnerships and opportunities for international training will equip healthcare professionals with cutting-edge skills.

The policy addresses the return and reintegration of Nigerian health professionals from the Diaspora. It establishes streamlined registration processes and provides attractive incentives to encourage the return of talented professionals.

The policy champions reciprocal agreements with other nations to ensure that the exchange of health workers benefits Nigeria. These bilateral and multilateral agreements are designed to protect national interests while respecting the rights and aspirations of healthcare professionals.

The Minister of Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, has condemned a viral video showing a lady filming her mentally unstable mother.

The minister described the video as disturbing, unacceptable, and potentially harmful. She emphasized that exploiting vulnerable individuals, especially those struggling with mental health issues, goes against the values of empathy and care.

The video, which has sparked outrage online, shows the lady engaging with her visibly unwell and unkempt mother. The lady claims her mother became mentally ill after her father’s death and has been living on the streets. Despite this, the lady visits her mother periodically with food and money.

Kennedy-Ohanenye urged the public to demonstrate compassion and understanding towards individuals suffering from mental health issues. She stated, “Mental illness demands compassion, understanding, and support – not ridicule or exploitation”.

The ministry is seeking information on the mother’s identity and condition to ensure proper care and protection.
