– Tobi Amusan fails to reach 100m hurdles final at Paris 2024 Olympics
– Finished 3rd in Heat 1 with 12.55 seconds, missing qualification by one spot

In a stunning turn of events, Tobi Amusan, the 2022 world champion, failed to qualify for the 100m hurdles final at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Her time of 12.55 seconds in Heat 1 left her in 9th place, just shy of the top eight.

Amusan’s performance was marred by strong competition, including Jamaica’s Ackera Nugent and France’s Cyrena Samba-Mayela, who qualified with faster times. “I’m disappointed, but I gave it my all,” Amusan said.

Despite being a favorite to win gold for Team Nigeria, Amusan’s exit marks another disappointing outing for the country at the Olympics. Her world record and championship title seemed to weigh heavily on her shoulders.

The qualified athletes for the final include Grace Stark, Devynne Charlton, and Alaysha Johnson, among others.

EPL Admits VAR Mistakes, Eyes Faster Offside Tech

Published

on

English Premier League (EPL) has admitted to 13 Video Assistant Referee (VAR) errors in the first 23 rounds of the current season, a decline from 20 mistakes recorded at the same stage last year.

These included four incorrect VAR interventions and nine incidents where VAR failed to intervene when necessary, according to the Key Match Incidents panel.

In response, the league has launched a six-point plan to improve the accuracy, efficiency, and transparency of VAR decisions.

A major step in this initiative is the anticipated introduction of semi-automated offside technology (SAOT) before the season ends.

Push for Semi-Automated Offside Technology

The EPL hopes to accelerate offside rulings without compromising precision by implementing SAOT, a system already used in FIFA and UEFA competitions. This move is expected to cut VAR review times by an average of 31 seconds.

Speaking on the development, Chief Football Officer Tony Scholes expressed confidence in the improvements, stating, “The progress made over the last four to six weeks has been significant. So, we believe we’re going to be adopting the best system and the most accurate system.”

Additionally, the league is exploring a new protocol where referees will announce VAR decisions within stadiums, improving fan engagement.

Scholes emphasized, “Frankly, it’s not good enough [VAR communication with supporters in stadiums]. None of us here at the league believe it’s good enough, and we have a long way to go to improve it.

“We are constrained by IFAB. But we should improve it to the extent that we are able and authorized to do so. Our intention is for the referee to announce VAR decisions in the middle of the pitch from the start of next season. With regard to further VAR comms, we will continue to lobby IFAB to allow us to open up as much as we can.”

Despite progress, Scholes admitted that if confidence in SAOT is not fully achieved by the final rounds of this season, it may be delayed until the next campaign.

Breakdown of the Four Major VAR Mistakes

While the league did not disclose details of all nine missed VAR interventions, it outlined the four major errors:

1. Outtara ‘Handball’ – Bournemouth 1-1 Newcastle (August 25)

Incident: Dango Outtara scored a late winner for Bournemouth with a header. Referee David Coote allowed the goal.
VAR Decision: Tim Robinson overruled the goal for handball but did not send Coote to review it.
Outcome: There was no conclusive evidence that the ball touched Outtara’s arm in a way that justified overturning the goal. PGMOL chief Howard Webb admitted the VAR call was incorrect.

2. De Ligt Foul on Ings – West Ham 2-1 Man Utd (October 27)

Incident: West Ham’s Danny Ings went down in the penalty area after a challenge from Man United’s Mathijs de Ligt. Referee David Coote waved play on.
VAR Decision: Michael Oliver advised Coote to review the play, leading to a penalty decision, which West Ham converted.
Outcome: The penalty decision was deemed incorrect, and Man Utd manager Erik ten Hag was sacked the next day.

3. Noorgard Red Card – Brentford 0-0 Everton (November 23)

Incident: Christian Noorgard made contact with Everton’s Jordan Pickford’s knee while contesting for the ball.
VAR Decision: VAR advised referee Chris Kavanagh to issue a straight red card.
Outcome: The red card was overturned on appeal, and Noorgard’s three-match suspension was rescinded.

4. Milenkovic Goal Disallowed – Nottingham Forest 3-2 Southampton (January 19)

Incident: Nikola Milenkovic headed in a goal to extend Forest’s lead to 4-1.
VAR Decision: The goal was disallowed because Chris Wood, who was in an offside position, was deemed to have interfered with play.
Outcome: An independent panel ruled the goal should have stood.

EPL’s Six-Point Plan to Improve VAR

The Premier League has outlined the following objectives to enhance VAR usage:

  • Clarify the high threshold for VAR intervention and make “referee’s call” a recognized term in football discussions.
  • Minimize delays, with SAOT introduced as soon as it is deemed ready.
  • Improve fan engagement by allowing referees to announce VAR decisions on the pitch, with clear explanations on stadium screens.
  • Enhance VAR training to improve decision-making consistency.
  • Increase transparency through better communication with broadcasters and fans during matches.
  • Educate fans and stakeholders on VAR processes to foster a clearer understanding of its role.

As the league continues refining its officiating system, the push for more efficient and transparent decision-making remains a priority.

Former Bournemouth Star Jordan Chiedozie in Coma After Crash

Published

on

Jordan Chiedozie, a former Bournemouth player, is currently in a coma following a serious accident.

The 30-year-old footballer, son of former Tottenham winger John Okechukwu Chiedozie, plays for Bashley FC in the Southern League.

Chiedozie was on his way home from a weekend match in Tavistock with the club’s physio, Reighan Taylor, when their car developed a flat tyre on the M27.

As he was checking the problem, he was struck by another vehicle and was immediately rushed to the hospital.

Bashley FC confirmed the incident in a statement on Tuesday, saying, “Everyone connected with Bashley Football Club is devastated by the news that our player Jordan Chiedozie is currently in hospital with what is described as ‘life-changing, and potentially life-threatening’ injuries after a serious car crash.

Jordan was travelling back from Saturday’s Southern League match at Tavistock with club physio Reighan Taylor when they pulled over onto the hard shoulder of the M27 near Southampton to investigate a flat tyre.

“They were both outside the vehicle when it was hit heavily from behind by another car.

The driver of that vehicle has been arrested for alleged ‘drink-driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

Jordan was taken to Southampton Hospital suffering multiple broken bones and other physical injuries. At this time, he remains in a controlled coma.”

Though Taylor escaped physical injuries, she was deeply traumatized by the incident. The club also noted that she administered immediate first aid to Chiedozie before emergency services arrived.

“Reighan was not hurt physically but has suffered severe trauma. She was able to use her skills to provide immediate, although in such circumstances, very basic, first aid to Jordan at the scene.

The thoughts and prayers of everyone at the club are with Jordan and his family, and of course with Reighan, at what is a difficult time for all connected with Bashley FC.

“In view of the seriousness of the situation, the club has applied to the Southern League to have Tuesday’s scheduled home match against Thatcham Town postponed. The Southern League has respectfully agreed with the request.”

Chiedozie, who started his career at Bournemouth’s academy in 2007, has played for more than 15 clubs over the years.

Bashley manager David Lewis expressed his shock and concern, saying, “Everyone at the club is completely stunned by what happened, and our thoughts at the moment are far more with Jordan and his family, and with Reighan than they are with football.

“Jordan’s teammates are understandably in bits, and I am certain would not want to play so soon after this terrible accident. In such circumstances, I would certainly not want to give a team talk.

Therefore, we have applied for Tuesday’s match to be postponed.

“We are in close touch with Jordan’s immediate family and will do all that we can to support them at this awful time.”

The football community has rallied around Chiedozie and his family, hoping for his recovery.
