The University of Benin is set to reopen on August 11, following a temporary closure due to student protests and unrest.

The varsity’s management had halted academic activities indefinitely on July 4.

According to the registrar, Ademola Bobola, students are expected to return to their halls of residence on Sunday, with lectures resuming on Monday. The university management has resolved the issues that led to the shutdown, including electricity and water supply.

“As part of the conditions for resumption, each returning student is required to swear an affidavit of undertaking to be of good conduct,” Bobola said. The affidavit must be uploaded on the university’s Kofa page and submitted to the departmental course adviser within two weeks.

A two-storey residential building in Ebute-Metta, Lagos, was gutted by fire on Sunday, according to Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary.

The incident occurred at No. 14 Okobaba Street, off Ibadan Street.

The LASEMA Response Team responded to a distress call and arrived at the scene to find the building engulfed in flames. Further investigation revealed that the fire started in a flat on the top floor.

Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were recorded due to the swift intervention of emergency responders. The fire affected several units in the building, including a two-bedroom flat and a single room.

The fire has been subdued, and dampening down operations are ongoing, Oke-Osanyintolu stated. He praised the quick response of the LRT, LASEMA Fire Unit, and other agencies.

Grimah called for vigilance from players in the hospitality industry, urging proactive measures to profile guests. The commissioner promised to make the outcome of investigations known to the public. “We remain committed to ensuring safety and security,” Grimah said.
