The National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA) has called on Nigerians to exercise caution as the country records 30 deaths and 1,141 suspected cases of cholera.

The agency’s Director-General, Dr. Agnes Asagbra, urged carefulness, especially during the festive period.

Asagbra noted that cholera is a highly contagious bacterial infection caused by contaminated food or water. She advised Nigerians to prioritize their health and safety by imbibing good hygiene practices.

To prevent the spread of cholera, NBMA recommended boiling drinking water or using certified water purification methods.

Additionally, washing hands thoroughly with soap and water, especially before eating or preparing food, is crucial.

Asagbra urged Nigerians to avoid raw foods unless they can be peeled or washed with safe water. She emphasized the importance of keeping the environment clean and disposing waste properly to prevent contamination.

NBMA encouraged community leaders and health workers to disseminate this information and assist in educating the public about preventive measures.

The agency urged Nigerians to be vigilant and report any case of cholera to the nearest hospital.

Kebbi Police Kill One Robber, Arrest Another in Forest Shootout

Kebbi State Police Command has confirmed the death of a suspected armed robber and the arrest of another following a gunfight in a forested area of the state.

In a press release issued on Tuesday, the command’s spokesperson, SP Nafiu Abubakar, provided details of the encounter, which occurred during a routine patrol by police officers and local vigilantes from the Zogirma Divisional Police Headquarters.

“On December 9, 2024, around 5:00 PM, a combined team of policemen and vigilantes from the Divisional Police Headquarters, Zogirma, were on routine patrol along the Tilli/Durhella forest when they encountered two individuals, Gaboje Alhaji Bello ‘m’ from Sabuwar Tunga village, Bunza LGA, and another individual. Upon being accosted, the suspects opened fire,” the statement revealed.

Abubakar added, “In the ensuing exchange of gunfire, Gaboje was killed, while his accomplice, Wantude Alhaji Adure ‘m’ from Ilorin, Kwara State, was apprehended. A locally-made pistol and one live cartridge were recovered from them.”

Commending the operation, Kebbi State Commissioner of Police, CP Bello Sani, praised the officers for their courage and dedication.

He urged the team to maintain their momentum in tackling criminal activities across the state.

Sani reiterated the command’s dedication to safeguarding the lives and property of residents, reassuring the public of continued efforts to combat crime effectively.

The commissioner also directed the Divisional Police Officer to transfer the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation and prosecution.

Kano Police Bust N129bn Counterfeit Currency Ring, Arrest Three

Kano State Police Command announced on Tuesday the arrest of three individuals found in possession of counterfeit currency worth an astonishing N129 billion.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Abdullahi Kiyawa, confirmed the development during a press briefing in Kano.

He detailed the seized fake currencies, which included US Dollars, CFA Francs, and Naira, along with other currencies reportedly stolen from a foreign currency dealer.

“Counterfeit currencies equivalent to a total sum of N129bn were recovered,” Kiyawa stated.

He provided a breakdown of the recovered fake money: $3,366,000, CFA51,970,000, and N1,443,000.

In addition to apprehending the two individuals with the counterfeit cash, authorities also arrested a third person from whom the money was allegedly stolen.

All three suspects are now in police custody and cooperating with investigations aimed at uncovering the source of the counterfeit operation.

In a related development, the command reported the recovery of six live rounds of ammunition, three tricycles, eight motorcycles, and three parcels containing 175 wraps of dried leaves believed to be Indian hemp.

Other confiscations included 250 diazepam tablets, 278 sheep, and seven cattle, all retrieved during various operations by the police.

“These efforts have not only led to the arrest of offenders but have also served as a deterrent to others contemplating criminal activities,” Kiyawa explained.

He emphasized the impact of these operations in addressing serious crimes such as kidnapping, armed robbery, gang violence, and drug trafficking, noting significant progress in curbing such activities.
