Kano State Police Command announced on Tuesday the arrest of three individuals found in possession of counterfeit currency worth an astonishing N129 billion.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Abdullahi Kiyawa, confirmed the development during a press briefing in Kano.
He detailed the seized fake currencies, which included US Dollars, CFA Francs, and Naira, along with other currencies reportedly stolen from a foreign currency dealer.
“Counterfeit currencies equivalent to a total sum of N129bn were recovered,” Kiyawa stated.
He provided a breakdown of the recovered fake money: $3,366,000, CFA51,970,000, and N1,443,000.
In addition to apprehending the two individuals with the counterfeit cash, authorities also arrested a third person from whom the money was allegedly stolen.
All three suspects are now in police custody and cooperating with investigations aimed at uncovering the source of the counterfeit operation.
In a related development, the command reported the recovery of six live rounds of ammunition, three tricycles, eight motorcycles, and three parcels containing 175 wraps of dried leaves believed to be Indian hemp.
Other confiscations included 250 diazepam tablets, 278 sheep, and seven cattle, all retrieved during various operations by the police.
“These efforts have not only led to the arrest of offenders but have also served as a deterrent to others contemplating criminal activities,” Kiyawa explained.
He emphasized the impact of these operations in addressing serious crimes such as kidnapping, armed robbery, gang violence, and drug trafficking, noting significant progress in curbing such activities.
