PDP Deputy Women Leader Resigns

The deputy national women leader of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Hajiya Hajara Yakubu Wanka, has resigned her position.

In her resignation letter addressed to the acting national chairman of the party, Ambassador Iliya Damagun, Wanka said her resignation followed the opportunity given to her by the Bauchi state governor, Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, to serve as commissioner in his government.

Wanka expressed gratitude to the national leadership of the PDP for the rare privilege given to her to serve as the party’s deputy national women leader and to Governor Mohammed for finding her worthy to serve in his cabinet.

Wanka noted that the experience she gained while serving in the PDP would immensely enhance her performance as a commissioner in Bauchi state.

She was among the 24 commissioner-nominees’ list sent to the State House of Assembly by Governor Mohammed and screened and confirmed by the lawmakers.

Meanwhile, the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) has accepted and congratulated Hajiya Yakubu Wanka on her appointment as commissioner.

Japan, Nigeria Strengthen Ties

Japan’s Foreign Minister, Kamikawa Yoko, met with Nigeria’s Foreign Minister, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, to deepen bilateral relations.

They discussed enhancing cooperation in various sectors, particularly business and economic relations. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the Tokyo International Conference on African Development Ministerial Meeting.

Yoko expressed appreciation for constructive dialogues during her visit to Nigeria in April. She emphasized Japan’s interest in fostering stronger economic ties, including support for start-ups. Yoko also advocated for initiatives grounded in the Women, Peace, and Security framework.

Tuggar responded positively, acknowledging concrete progress achieved through the TICAD process.

Heexpressed gratitude for Japan’s ongoing support and conveyed Nigeria’s eagerness to further strengthen bilateral and regional cooperation. Both ministers reaffirmed their commitment to deepening Japan-Nigeria relations.

The Supreme Court on Friday affirmed Duoye Diri’s re-election as Bayelsa State Governor, dismissing Timipre Sylva’s appeal.

In a unanimous decision, the five-member panel rejected Sylva’s challenge to the November 11, 2023 election result.

Diri’s victory was upheld, solidifying his position as Bayelsa State Governor.
