“INEC Plans Result Management System Review in Response to Nigerians’ Complaints About 2023 General Elections”

Published

on

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced its intention to conduct a comprehensive review of its result management system, following widespread complaints from Nigerians concerning the conduct of the 2023 general elections. This review comes in light of the fact that the commission’s result management system has been embroiled in legal disputes.

During a post-election review meeting with Collation and Returning Officers held in Abuja, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, the chairman of INEC, emphasized the need for an assessment of both strengths and weaknesses in the current system to facilitate improvements.

Addressing the concerns raised by Nigerians about the result management process at different levels, Professor Yakubu acknowledged the presence of legal cases and the sensitivities surrounding the matter. Nevertheless, he encouraged an open discussion to gain insights and share experiences to chart a way forward.

The commission seeks to gain a better understanding of the experiences of Collation and Returning Officers during the 2023 elections. As part of this process, the commission wishes to explore aspects such as the recruitment, training, and posting of these officers, logistical arrangements for their movements, the integrity of the collation and declaration procedures, the role of technology in result management, the security of Collation/Returning Officers and collation centers, the conduct of party agents and election observers during collation, as well as the behavior of security personnel.

Through this review and by listening to the perspectives of those directly involved in the electoral process, INEC aims to identify areas that require reform and implement necessary improvements for future elections.
